About the Role
A Firefighter is a highly trained and dedicated professional responsible for protecting life and property by responding to and mitigating a wide range of emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, hazardous material releases, and other public safety challenges. Firefighters operate under hazardous conditions and require exceptional physical fitness, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. This position also involves proactive community engagement, fire prevention, and continuous training to maintain readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Emergency Response:
-Respond quickly and safely to alarms and emergency calls, including structural fires, brush fires, vehicle fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and technical rescue operations.
-Operate and maintain a variety of fire apparatus, tools, and equipment.
-Apply appropriate firefighting techniques, including hose line deployment, ventilation, forcible entry, search and rescue, and overhaul operations.
-Administer emergency medical care at various levels (e.g., First Responder, EMT) according to training and protocols.
-Contain and mitigate hazardous material spills and releases following established procedures.
-Perform specialized rescue operations, such as vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, and high-angle rescue.
Station Duties and Maintenance:
-Conduct daily inspections and maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, and tools to ensure operational readiness.
-Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the fire station, living quarters, and grounds.
-Perform routine administrative tasks, including completing reports, maintaining logs, and recording incident details.
-Participate in drills and training exercises to enhance skills and knowledge.
Fire Prevention and Public Education:
-Conduct fire prevention inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties to identify and correct fire hazards.
-Participate in community outreach programs and public education initiatives, including fire safety presentations at schools and community events.
-Install smoke detectors and provide fire safety advice to residents.
Physical Fitness and Training:
-Maintain a high level of physical fitness necessary to perform strenuous and demanding tasks under emergency conditions.
-Participate in regular physical fitness training and agility drills.
-Engage in continuous professional development and training to stay current with best practices, new technologies, and certifications.
Teamwork and Communication:
-Work effectively as a member of a team, following commands and communicating clearly under stressful conditions.
-Maintain professional and courteous interactions with the public, allied agencies, and fellow firefighters.
Requirements
Required for Eligibility:
Ability to speak, read, and write the English language.
Successful completion of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to background checks and drug screening.
Possession of a current CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certification OR be scheduled for a CPAT and a pre-employment physical within 43 days prior to being hired.
Strongly Urged/Recommended:
Currently hold basic Level I or Level II firefighting certification through the Kentucky Fire Commission.
Have an updated physical.
For Lateral Applicants:
Must have been employed within the past 12 months as a full-time firefighter with another fire department in Kentucky.
